From 5-9 December 2017, Modafen High School Students were in Cern in connection with the CERN tour program, including visits to Geneva, Lausanne, Montreux, Como, Milan, Modena and Bologna . Our students were accompanied by professional guides during the trip.
This program has been designed to help our students, who aim to have a career in science and technology, enrich their imagination and acquire new point of views, as well as give them an opportunity to understand the developments in the area over the decades. The first place to visit was the European Organization for Nuclear Research (CERN). There, our students learnt about the history of CERN, the Great Hadron Collider, the reason behind the existence of mass, the nature of dark matter, experiments on the Higgs particle, and they also watched the presentations made by the scientists. Furthermore, our students had lunch with the scientists working there after visiting the Microcosm and Globe exhibitions. They also got information about the control center (CCC) of Cern and the cryogenic test centers. After lunch, our students carried out their own experiments having been given a training on “Cloud Chamber”. Then, they visited the two very important cities for Turkish history: Lausanne and Montreux. In Lausanne, they went to Beau-Rivage Palace Hotel where the Lausanne Peace Treaty had been signed and they talked about the importance of the treaty once again.
In Milan, after the city tour, they saw “Leonardo da Vinci Science and Technology Museum”. The work of Leonardo da Vinci drew the attention of our students a lot.
The last stop of our trip was the Ferrari factory tour and museum visit in Modena. Our students had the chance of trying a test drive with Ferrari pilots. During the trip our students acquired new information on cultural, technological, and historical topics, as well as having a lot of fun.
